Variety is the spice of life! If this is your motto then the Bahamas are your ideal destinations. Each island has its own diversity in geography, culture and art, but the one common element for all 700 islands to share is the warmth and smile inherited by all Bahamian people. In fact a wonderful program called The People-to-People Program was established some years ago to pair up locals and visitors, encouraging cultural exchanges.
And if that is not enough, there are miles of empty beaches with crystal clear waters and modern facilities for you to enjoy. Many water sports can be practiced on them such as diving, snorkelling, boating or kayaking. Nature lovers will be enchanted by the gardens and the colourful sea life. Charming colonial villages can be found on many islands and offer hours of leisurely discoveries
Nassau is the capital and the heart of the Islands of the Bahamas. It is ideally located in a sheltered harbour and the city contains beautiful colonial mansions, cathedrals and 18th century fortresses. Just 180 m northeast of Nassau is Paradise Island which is connected to the city by two bridges. On it, you will find many resorts, hotels, restaurants, shops, a golf course and a casino.
The nearby Cable Beach is home for most resorts where you can play in the crystalline waters or simply sunbathe the day away. A great place to meet the friendly local and get acquainted with their handicraft is at the Straw Market. When night comes you can try your luck at the casinos or dance till dawn at one of the many hip nightclubs.
The Spanish gave the island the name Gran Bajamar, meaning "Great Shallows", and what the eventual name of the Bahamas islands as a whole is derived from. Grand Bahama Island, the second most visited island in the Bahamas, will enchant you with a mix of historic charm, modern attractions and ecological wonders.
The island is a paradise for eco tourists. It has one of the world's largest underwater cave systems, three national parks, endless beaches and crisp blue water with enchanting marine life. Many water sports can be practiced on them such as diving, snorkelling, boating or kayaking. For a more cultural tour visit the charming colonial villages that can be found all over the island, such as Freeport, Lucaya and West End.
Great Exuma is part of the chain of 365 islands that form the Bahamas and, with the many other cays, offers an amazing variety of vacation possibilities. The islands are a popular spot for yachting, sailing, diving, and coral reef and cave exploring.
The capital of the Exumas, George Town, has a colorful history. Shopping, marinas, restaurants and a few bars are the main attractions. There are remains of cotton plantations all over the islands. Many of the unnamed beaches and coves of the islands, including extensive offshore reef areas, are included in the protected Exuma National Land and Sea Park of the Bahamas National Trust.
